Catching up on magazines the last couple of weeks. Here’s a couple of articles that caught my eye:

Jonathan Alter “He Only Saved a Billion People”
Norman Borlaug, an agronomist, is credited with saving one in seven people through a combination of soil conservation and planting techniques. This is a single person who has made a huge difference in the world.

How to rule in the Blogosphere
Wired magazine has their “How To” issue this month. You can learn how to do almost everything, or everything geeky, in one short issue. Very cool.

Best Bra for Every Figure
I think this is fairly self explanatory.

Listening:

The easy answer is that I’ve been listening to Seether. They joined the Breaking Benjamin tour after Puddle of Mudd. But here’s the ponderable:

Broken
Amy Lee and Shaun Morgan supposedly had a relationship. This song is said to be about their relationship, but you can tell that it was never a very clear path for them.

Call me when you’re sober:
Amy Lee is the lead singer in a band called Evanescence. This song is supposed to be about her relationship with Shaun Morgan or the end of her relationship with Shaun Morgan. She broke up with him, married a therapist, and had a baby – then released this song.

Remedy
But then there’s always the Remedy.

When asked if he would release a song in response to “Call me when you’re sober”:

Morgan recently told MTV, “People would say to me, ‘Yeah, man, I know what you’re going through,’ and I was like, ‘No, I don’t think you do.’ Your ex-girlfriend didn’t write a song about you, that millions of people have heard, saying you’re a bad guy. As soon as that happens, buddy, come up and tell me you know what I’m going through.

I was bummed out. I was really upset that she would say and do those things. In any relationship, I don’t think it’s right to say and do those things when people break up, and she obviously felt the need to go out there and make me sound like a complete a–hole. What can I do? I just refuse to lower myself to that level. But it was a painful thing and it got me down — people coming up to me on the street and referring to that song. But I didn’t feel the need to write back and be mean.”

Wikipedia reports that he is married and has a child.

It’s not as much listening as pondering the relationship drama. But hell, I’m a middle child. What would you expect?

Watching:

We just discovered MI-5 or Spooks. It’s a BBC television program which started in 2002. Cute guys (Matthew Macfadyen), great action, interesting plot, how could you go wrong??

Harry Potter and the Deadly Hollows

Along with a billion of my closest friends, I pre-ordered this book and it arrived Saturday. I like it. It has interesting characters and great relationships. Sure, some of it was cheesy but oh well. If I want great literature, I can go back to Google Books.

Listening:

Papa Roach – Forever (pre-release)

Sadly I will miss their show here in Denver. But I like this song. And the video is so cute with them kissing between their lip piercings. Ok, that’s kind of retarded.

On our way to Colorado, we arrived on the scene of a horrible auto accident where a green Saturn spun out of control in a freak thunderstorm. The passenger seat, and it’s passenger, were ripped out of the vehicle. In the pelting rain, I sat next to the passenger, with my hand on her shoulder, while she died. We listened to this album (Ghosts that Haunt Me) all the rest of the way to Denver. I think this song on my head because of the trademark crapola in the Open Grove.

Watching:

Slither

It’s embarrassing, but the last movie I watched was Slither. We watched all of Firefly (which is quite good) and Serenity. The captain of Serenity is in Slither. I shake my head at my own ridiculousness. Let’s hope the Red Head gives back our Shaun of the Dead DVD soon. For fuck’s sake, we need some quality zombie action!

The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy

Rocker Girl told me about the New York Times Book Reading Group, which after some trouble, I found here. My best friend B. told me that Google was creating an electronic library by scanning book whose licenses have expired. Combine the two and I downloaded this book (you can too!) on .pdf and have been reading it. It’s actually quite good.

Watching:

Danny Deckchair

A guy ties helium balloons to his deckchair and flies away from his messed up life. It sounds really stupid. In fact, it arrived from Netflix and we didn’t watch it for over a week. In desperation, and hundred degree heat, we gave it a try and liked it. It’s funny, charming, and smart. Plus the guy is gorgeous (not at first but later) and it has Miranda Otto. Check it out.

Zeitgeist
(Tarantula on YouTube)

Zeitgeist is an interesting word for an interesting time in the world. The album’s also good.
