100 things in 100 days – day 3

I was challenged by my friend Cathy yesterday to not only give up one thing a day, but to also give up one negative belief. She said she tried Throw out 50 things which includes letting go of negative thoughts.

Luckily, I know exactly how to rid myself of negative thoughts!  The best technique I’ve ever used is EFT. If you haven’t tried it, I’d strongly encourage you to try it. Plus it’s free. Having added this today, I’m two thoughts behind. I’ll try to catch up this weekend.

100 things

1.  Creatine Monohydrate – 5 years old – trash.
2.  Sony Clie (circa 2002?) – trash (this is pretty worn due to near constant use
3. Perfume  - I went through it and threw 2 bottles of old cologne away. I will sell/give away a bottle of perfume and a bottle of cologne.

100 thoughts

1. “I am fat.”

Report:

I don’t really feel any different. We’ll see what time brings.

100 things, 100 days.

I have a number online friends who are taking Dave Bruno’s 100 thing challenge. Since I find 100 things to be a little too arbitrary for me (notice that he and Lou are men and thus don’t count things like dishes, pans, or eating utensils in their 100 things), I’ve decided to get rid of a 100 things in 100 days.

Starting September 1, I’m going to get rid of one thing or set of things (ex. clothing, books, whatever) a day. Since my particular clutter specializes in fabulous things that worked for someone else, but not me or old, outdated business tools, I will focus on these gems. I plan to sell, trade, Freecycle, donate, give away or, last resort, throw away these items.

As a way to stay motivated, I plan to post what I give away every day.

So here goes nothing:

September 1, 2010 – Creatine Monohydrate – 5 years old – trash.
September 2, 2010 – Sony Clie (circa 2002?) – trash (this is pretty worn due to near constant use for years)

Wish me luck! :)

Re-thinking humankind.

This 10 minute video is intriguing and compelling. The basic premise is that we are not hardwired for self interest and aggression. Rather we are softwired for kindness, compassion, and connection.

And holy crap! Who knew that all 6.5 billion human beings came from one woman and one man??

Seriously. That means that everyone of us – including that kid you hated in elementary school and my crack head neighbors – belong to the same family.

Take the time to watch this. You won’t be sorry.

I’d love to know what you think!

Pure Genius!

“If you knew how much work went into it, you would not call it genius.”
~
Michelangelo

I’ve been a fan of Michelangelo for a very long time. When I had a chance to go to Italy, I traveled from place to place in order to see his work. While all of his work is amazing, I found his unfinished work to be compelling.

These two statues in particular look almost as if they could shrug, and the rock would leave their shoulders. Even in this uncompleted state, the figures look as if they were real and only needed to shed their stone prisons.

At the time, just a few days after a hard won college degree, I felt like these beings – stuck in stone, ready to shrug off the granite that keep me from being who and what I am. Now, I see them differently.

Having worked to write, I’ve come to see a story, like a sculpture has an innate quality and beauty all its own. My job as novelist is to uncover the stories beauty. I call this ‘telling the story well.’

My favorite Michelangelo sculpture is the Pieta below.

Yes, it’s Mary.

Yes, it’s Jesus.

Yes, it’s something that was commissioned by a Pope and is a story that was told over and over and over and over again.

Standing in front of the statue, I was struck dumb. I stood there for… I’m not sure how long. Hours, I think. I was finally nudged along my way by security.

What struck me?

Mary’s sorrow and resignation. The defeat in both of their postures. This wasn’t a woman holding a deity.  This is a statue of a mother – flesh and blood, real and breathing – who’d lost her precious son. Her sorrow is not for the loss of a great being to the world. Her sorrow and resignation is for the simple, human loss of her son.

Standing in front of this statue, I felt as if Michelangelo had stretched through time and touched me.

“Remember, we’re all human,” I heard.

“Remember, we all die,” I heard.

And, as if broadcast loud and clear, I saw and heard:

“Love is all that matters.”

When I read this quote: “If you knew how much work went into it, you would not call it genius,” I realize something significant.

We are born with gifts, but it’s through our work that we hone our gifts.

Work hard, my friends. You never know who’s heart and mind you will touch with your work. You never know when you might touch the heart of someone and inspire them to spread your message.

Unconscious Mutterings : Week 395

I’m posting today from my new walking station. I set up a treadmill so I can try walking and working. You see, the Mayo Clinic did a study where people walked and worked with little work interruption. It was so successful that the participants wouldn’t give up their treadmills when the study was over. We rigged a treadmill to work. And we’ll see. If I can improve my health and edit/write? Sounds great to me!

With all these changes, it’s nice some things stay the same. Like our unconscious mutterings. I love it when you play too.  To play, simply answer these word prompts (created by Luna Nina) in the comment section. Playing relieves your unconscious! Try it!

Why aren’t kids barefoot anymore?

When I was a kid, I could hardly wait to get out of my shoes every summer. I would get one pair of huge new shoes at the beginning of the school year. By the end of the year came around, the shoes were pretty broken down and small.

No matter! It was barefoot season.

The very first thing I would do is try to get my feet ready for a season of hot pavement and cement.  I did this by painfully walking across the gravel in my parents front yard. After a few days, my callouses were building and my feet were ready. Any moment I wasn’t in summer school or church, I was barefoot.

And why not? It was summer!

When I grew older, and started working, I was able to buy my own shoes. I wore anything I could slip on or take off at a moments notice. Clogs were handy. Even dress shoes worked. Seriously. Shoes were camouflage, something I wore when someone was around but discarded the moment they left. This continued through college and my first jobs.

I’ve been barefoot almost everywhere. Even if I wore shoes, I was just as likely to slip them off to let my feet breathe.

I never wore shoes until I moved to Colorado. Outside of athletic socks, I never owned a pair of socks until I moved to Colorado.

Recently, I was wandering down our sidewalk with Rose, our dog, when the neighbor’s eight year old said the universal Colorado shoe call:

“Where are your shoes?”

“In the closet.” Without thinking, I gave the response I give to my husband, father-in-law and now this eight year old kid.

Then it hit me. This is a eight year old kid. It’s summer. Why was he wearing shoes?? What could possibly be wrong with him? I must have gawked because he looked a little puzzled.

“No really,” he said. “Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”

“I love the way the cement feels on my feet,” I said. “Why are you wearing shoes?”

He looked at me as if he’d never considered the idea. He looked down at his feet then back at me.

“Try it,” I said and wandered into our house.

It gives me great joy to tell you that I’ve seen him barefoot ever since then.  Barefoot riding his bike. Barefoot wandering down the pavement. Barefoot on the grass. You name it, the kid’s caught the bug.

But the entire experience gave me pause.

Why aren’t kids barefoot anymore?

I have a lot of other thoughts about this, but rather than complicate the issue, I put this question out to the world.

Why aren’t kids barefoot anymore?

Unconscious Mutterings : Week 393

This photo is the shining glory of our accomplishments for the last two weeks – a new sewer drain. It’s tapped into the still functioning old sewer drain but fixed the massive leaks. This sewer has been broken the entire time we’ve lived here and quite possibly for decades. It was fixed last night. I did go out this morning, cup of decaf in hand, to make sure it was still draining. It is. Yes, my mind is in the sewer.

Luckily, I can refresh my unconscious with my favorite game, Unconscious Mutterings. How does is work? Simply write whatever comes to mind after reading these word prompts (created by the lovely Pea at Luna Nina). If you’d like to play, and I’d love it if you did, please leave your answers in the comments section. Feel free to take a look at what other’s have written. Comment if you’d like.  It’s that easy – and very fun.

  3. Pink eye ::
  4. Expensive ::
  5. Dancer ::
