Thursday Thirteen – Art Candy

I’ve recently become a bit addicted to Vulture, the entertainment column of the New York Times.

Ok, together now: “You’re suck a geek!” Feel better?

One of my favorite features is the daily art column called Art Candy. The last week has been so funny that I just had to share some of my favorites. A big high five to Rachel Wolff, the reporter for this column. She’s funny.

Thursday Thirteen #19 - My favorite Art Candy

1. This is the last year Julie Rofman will serve on the Prom Committee. (3/4/08)

Julie Rofman

Left Over by Julie Rofman

I have no idea what this is – it looks like the top of a high school gym but who really knows?

2. Use For That Excess Skin You Have Lying Around (3/3/08)

Skin doll

Epidermis Interactive Pet by Stuart Karten Design

“These grotesque, wrinkly balls of flesh (they’re made of engineered human tissue) come fully customized ? your four-legged creature can be tanned, tattooed, or pierced to your desired specifications”

Ew!

3. Hanging out with some dudes. (2/29/08)

Brian Finke

Untitled (Frat Boys #1 and #3)

I have a D.P. who says that his frat days were the “best days of his life”.

Yeah. Now I know why….

4. The world’s laziest swimmer. (2/22/08)

world?s laziest swimmer

Joel Meyerowitz’s Elements Air:Water

5. Much fabled ugly tree. (2/11/08)

Dead Tree by Frank Webster

Frank Webster’s Dead Tree

I guess the orange is supposed to reflect the dawn of spring but really, don’t you think it’s the burning apocalypse that killed the tree and every other living thing in this painting.

6. Manhattan at noon? (2/7/08)

Gus Powell?s Putti

Gus Powell’s Putti

“Though it?s always good to have confidence in your work, this shot ? part of Gus Powell?s ?Manhattan Noon? show currently up at the Museum of the City of New York ? makes us a little uneasy.”

And this is art??

7. I shot the Sheriff (10/10/07)

Ralph Steadman and Hunter S. Thompson The Sheriff

Ralph Steadman & Hunter S. Thompson’s The Sheriff (1995)

Given the fact that Thompson shot himself in the head ten years after it was made, this painting is a little prophetic. Wouldn’t you say?

8. Picasso revisited. (12/18/07)

Julien Friedler

Julien Friedler’s Les Demoiselles d?Avignon

“Uptown gallery Francis M. Naumann asked a crop of contemporary artists to submit their take on Picasso?s beastly whores. ?The Demoiselles Revisited? will be up at the gallery through Friday.”

I laughed out loud when I saw this picture. Click here to see Picasso‘s work for comparison.

9. Nothing a nice wall hanging wouldn’t fix. (6/27/07)

Yehudit Sasportas

Yehudit Sasportas’s The Guardians of the Threshold (2007)

Laughed out loud again. Rachel is funny. Wouldn’t you say?

10. My humps, my humps, my luscious lady lumps. (01/28/08)

Lisa Yuskavage

Lisa Yuskavage?s Wrist Corsage (1996)

Do think this is what they mean by “Yoga butt”??

11. Awwwkward (08/17/07)

Inspection

Erwin Wurm?s Inspection (2002?2003)

What do you say?

“Excuse me, I need to inspect your breasts.”

Maybe, “Are those things real?”

12. Painting without his glasses. (1/30/08)

BlueBlob by Bill

Bill Armstrong’s Untitled #1018 (2006)

Hey Bill, How about “Blue Blob by Bill”??

13. Bare Rug (10/27/07)

Nude with Afghani rug

Mariah Robertson?s Nude With Afghani Export Rug (2007)

When I first saw this, I thought, “nice ass”. Then I took a look at the rug. Art imitating life? Can you see the tanks, AK47s and helicopters?

number 10- stop taking pictures of me when I am not looking!

number11- I LOLed just at the title! lol that is hysterical! hahahaha

    Great TT!!
  • Colleen - No, but it is confusing. I think we all expect a guy to have his head up his butt but not necessarily down someone's top - you know?

CajunVegan - I bet you could so use your spring break about now!

Karen - Let's hope your boys have more to look forward to than those being the "best days of their life".

Lori - I thought so myself.

Chuck - It is a fun meme. I was going to start another tomorrow. I'll check out the band one....
  • I did the kind fives again and linked ya. Some other games too if you're interested. Tomorrow will be the band meme. That was the funnest one I've ever done. If ya wanna play, come on by. You're in my blogroll, so you automatically get tagged. Don't have to, of course, but it could be fun...We'll have a cup'a joe or someth'n someth'n.

    Love ya - *smackies*

( Meme Catchup (Hold the Mayo))
  • LMAO...OMG #8 is hilarious:) Happy TT and thanks for stopping by. Great post.
  • Wow, those are interesting. I passed over the frat boy one really fast since I have two in college. Yikes!
  • Entertaining and um, yeah ... thought-provoking ... loved them all

How do you feel about standardized testing? I've posted 13 Anti-NCLB Sentiments to mark the end of a stressful testing week.

    Happy TT!
  • # 2: Does it vibrate?
#11: Is someone missing a head?

    I loved these!
  • Alana - Definitely odd....

    Corina - Um - you're a blue blob? ;)

Xakara - yes, that is wise!

Hootin' Anni - I hope you are somewhere safe and warm.
  • I especially like #11 I believe...the one entitled awwwkward.

sorry so late...big storm in our area and computer was down.
  • 5, 9 and 10 were very interesting. That said, I'm going to take my trauma with the flesh pet and go home now...

    ~X
  • Great pictures! #12 would be me.
  • Man - those are some very interesting pictures - very creative list.
  • Sarah - Yeah, imagine it on your wall or mantle. That's a conversation starter.

    Melanie - you said it!

Deanna Dahslad - I feel your pain. Sadly, my mind moves on from it like - what do you think their #1 selling product will be... hmm.....

    Darla - Yes, it's a positive addiction.

Bad Puppy Dog - You do yoga?? ;)

Tink - They are odd, aren't they?
  • I don't think the tree is ugly, but I like odd pictures!
Thanks for visiting my inspiring people TT.
  • that list still has me giggling! I think the wrist corsage used MY butt for a model.. definately not geeky, i would love the column too.. thanks for stopping by, and happy TT!
  • I think I'm going to become addicted to Art Candy, too--the commentary is priceless!
  • After seeing the skin pet, everything else was a blur... Where's one of those airline bags...
  • Definitely some very interesting art!
  • Interesting to say the least. I think some are a bit too risk-ay for my taste.
Happy TT! Stop by Sassyfrazz if you get a chance!
  • Heart in SF - As usual, your mind leaps to the logical conclusions. I have a friend who keeps her keloids when they are removed. And shows them at parties. Ew.

Greatfullivin' - It's not synthetic skin. Pft - what are you thinking? It's cell culture grown skin. (which is just that much more worse)

Babystepper - Yes or in the giggles.
  • Yet a few more reasons why much of modern art leaves me cold.
  • Synthectic skin??? Gross. Picasso could be an original its so, so , so Picasso-like.
  • heart in san francisco
So if I get a tummy tuck or face lift, I should save the skin to make a little creature that I can carry in my purse? That one is too weird for words.
  • Jennifer McKenzie - Have you seen the original? This rendition is... modern? ;)

Zenmomma - You and me both... then my mind goes really unpleasant places....

    Beeker - Me too!

Michael C - I think what's brilliant about Art Candy is that it's not a professional artist - just someone with a bit of wit.

Laura - Yea! snow again! sneer.... Yes, epidermis pet is nasty.

Eve - Yes, indeed, the phrase "works of art" is fitting here.

Journeywoman - Yeah, too bad we can't do that to the guys?
  • I love the "inspection"

    Happy TT.
  • Eve
Interesting works of art. Very clever titling.
  • Epidermis pet! OMG! Wow. Great list!

And hello from a fellow Denverite!
  • These were great! You've given me an idea though. Since I have no artistic ability, maybe I can just comment on the art I see from now on so I feel like I have something to do with the arts ;-)

The NY Times column is definitely something I'm going to check out!!
  • Thanks for introducing me to something new! This is really funny stuff. I about fell out of my chair at the guy with his head down the woman's shirt. Great List!
  • This was such a cool list! The flesh toy really creeps me out though.
  • These are fascinating!!!!! Of course, Picasso Revisited was a little....scary, but the rest were interesting.
  • Reynie - Yes, the titles are very funny - Rachel Wolff, man, she's a hoot.

Holly -It's strangely moving, isn't it?

Comedy Plus - I feel quite accomplished for fill your offbeat appetite!

Dane Bramage - Shh... shh.... I'm already grossed out.
  • If I harvested my excess flesh I could probably make a case of thse #2 thingies. And while I think #10 is interesting, I hardley think it is Fergalicious.

Thanks for visiting my T13 this week.
  • I love them all. I love anything different and a bit offbeat. This post fills that ticket. Have a great TT. :)
  • Okay - me too with being grossed out by the epidermis pet. Some I liked, some I didn't. Don't know why but my favorite is the one without glasses. It's a blurry blob really - but I like it.

    Thanks for visiting my TT-13!

    Smiles,
    Holly

  • #4 is great! The titles of each are hysterical. I guess art is in the eye of the beholder... I just question some of the beholders!
  • Julia - Yeah - amazing too. I wonder what caught their attention. The swimmer is beautiful.
  • Ann Bruce - Scary isn't it??

Kaige - Blue Blob by Bill? It's strangely beautiful, isn't it? I do love the color.

Robin - Yes, yes, yes. You and me both! :)

Storyteller - I'm hoping he's not dead - and you?

    Sandy M - Indeed.

Brenda ND - Huh, that's indeed very interesting. Thanks for the perspective.

Mary - You inspire me to stretch into these weirdo art realms.... thank you!

Scooper - That one makes me laugh as well.

Rian Fike - Oh... dear.... the skin thing too??

The CEO - I am so very glad - love you too!

Ed - Yes. funny... disturbing... I suppose that's art?
  • I love this T13! Strangely, the photo 'Gus Powell?s Putti' is my favorite - I love how they're lounging around, and yes, their confidence in their work. I also love the World's Laziest Swimmer.
  • Ed
Interesting. Some very funny and a couple quite disturbing. thanks for the TT
  • I love this blog. Art, philosophy, genuine friendship, and more. Thank you.

    Monty
  • This is perhaps the most valuable TT I have ever found. Art Candy looks like my life! Thanks for the hook-up.
  • I love the Picasso revisited.
  • Claudia, this is great! They are all amazing and funny and strange! I'm going to use something from the archive for "Bad Art Friday" my post on Answers to the Questions tomorrow.
  • Great pictures! My favorite is the first one. To me, it looks like a huge lost and found pile floating on a gym ceiling. I'd hang that in my house. Happy TT!
  • Very interesting indeed!
  • Most are quite strange indeed ? but I like #4 and 5 best methinks ? especially #4.
    Hugs and blessings,
  • That tree picture really does look like the "after" picture after the bomb drops.

    Love the "wallhanging" tagline.

The skin things - absolutely not going there. Ewwwww!!!
  • Thanks for sharing! I didn't need another time sink, but you may have just given me one. =) The skin pet thing was very strange. I loved the painting with his glasses off though! Awesome.

    Happy TT, Claudia!
  • You know you just made me an addict, too.
  • No Nonsense Girl - You too! :)

Natalie - yeah - like the skin thing? ew.

Jameil - Yes, they are very short - which is delicious. You know the skin thing is made to order - can you imagine?? You should so do a TT - they are fun. It's like christmas caroling or something.
  • engineered human tissue?? I'M GONNA VOMIT!! i def. love that they're mostly one-liners. some *read:most* nyt writers have a tendency to be too long-winded. i love thursday 13!! i just don't know where to start ever...
  • Interesting stuff...some made me laugh, others made me go...huh?
  • Happy Thursday 13 Claudia. :)
  • Cricket's Hearth - You and me both!

Ivanhoe - Oh, I thought the title of #9 was hilarious.... at least you found something you like!

Joely - hmmm maybe I need to rethink.

Tommie - I interviewed a guy who was one of "the" yoga experts. He laughed with me off the tape about yoga butt. I have no idea really what that is.

Pussreboots - ahahaha. What did you SAY??

Lori - That's funny because it's what they say he does - paints without his glasses.
  • Unfortunately, that blue blob is about all I see without my glasses. Mind stirring images.
  • Oh boy... what a collection of images! I had to stop to explain the Picasso inspired statue to my six year old. LOL. Happy TT.
  • The yoga just made me laugh! I do yoga at least 5-6 days a week....as much as I like my lady hump, it doesn't look like that.
  • #9 is my favorite. Happy TT!
  • I must admit - these are pretty weird. I kind of like #1, 6 & 9. Cool idea for T13. Thanks for visiting and happy TT!
  • I'm still laughing at Picasso!
  • G'daybloke - You and me both!

Janet - Good to know! Thanks for sharing that!

Sandy Carlson - I thought it was hilarious. Yes, right on as well!

Nicole Austin - You said it.
  • Interesting pictures, rather out there. One man's art... LOL!

    Happy TT!
  • Picasso revisited is dead on! And I love Manhattan at noon.
  • Oops, I shouldn't have put my name there, I'm not playing this week! But I just had to say...Joel Meyerowitz is my VERY favorite photographer! You should check out some of his work. Amazingly talented with light.
  • That fleshy knobby thing is scaring me...

    Lost Hemisphere's TT #5
  • Marcia - Yes, odd.

Chuck - weelll, at least I'm in good company.

Chelle Y - Ew is right! Bleck!

Michelle - Yes, can you imagine what people make?? It's all make by order.

Nicholas - I busted a gut on #9 - just because of the original - but yes, less forget all about 2 shall we?

That gal herself - Yes, well.... Unless he's dead.

Susan Helen Gottfried - Check at Art Candy. There might be... who knows? The entire section is pretty hilarious given how serious people are about their celebrities.
  • Those are wild. And a bit on the grotesque side, but ... they're still neat to look at. If only there was an RSS feed for those, you know I'd be all over it!
  • I liked #4. He seems so peaceful and satisfied with himself. I'd trade with him! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for visiting my TT.
  • What a varied selection! I think I shall quickly pass over #2 and just say that I like #10 and #11 best.
  • You and me both, Chelle! That's truly repulsive. LOL on the Picasso m'amselle. Great images, and great TT. Thanks for the visit.
  • I am utterly grossed out about the epidermis pet! Ewww!
  • You are so not a geek, 'cause you see, I can relate. I'm not a geek. Wait a minute. Maybe I am. Anyhoo, I connected with the butt shots. The guy - oooooh weeeee! And the female - kinda looks like mine. I got a nice bootie, you see. *giggling*

Love ya - happy TT :)
  • Odd indeed
